First Choice Haircutters
Franchise fee: $22,500
Investment required: First salon, $105,000; each additional salon, $12,500

First Choice Haircutters knows all the latest trends. But the most current trend that its franchisees are seeing is the boom in new customers. "People are always going to get haircuts, no matter how tight money is. And many people are going to First Choice, which is a much lower cost than expensive luxury salons," says Alan Storry, president of franchise development for Regis Corp, which owns l0 salon brands in Canada.

First Choice is for motivated go-getters with business savvy. "Many times," he says, "this is the first time they've owned any business." Upon signing, franchisees pledge to open three salons, preferably within three years. The average franchisee operates six.

Like the franchisees she works with, Teresa Partridge, Canada's Director of Franchise Development, has zero haircutting experience, unless you count hacking off her Barbie dolls' tresses. "Ninety-eight percent of franchisees keep their full-time job when they start their first salon," she says. They hire or partner with a manager and many depend on frequent random visits to vet quality.

"We don't want you to cut hair" specifies Storry. "We're here to teach you the hair industry."
